THE VIRTUES OF THE QURAN & QURAN TUTOR FOR YOU
“I am leaving among you two weighty things: one being the Book of Allah in which there is right guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it. ……”(Muslim, Fada’il al-Sahaba, 36-37)
The value and importance of the Qur’an can better be understood in the following hadith:
“In the presence of Allah there is no word more precious than the Qur’an.”
(Darimi, Fada’il al-Qur’an, 5).
In another hadith,
“The superiority of the word of Allah over other words is like Allah’s superiority over His creations’”
(Tirmidhi, Fada’il al-Qur’’an, 25),
“Study the Book of Allah, and live by its principles”(Nasai,Sunan al-Kubra, 5, 18)
A superior characteristic of the Qur’an is the fact that it will intercede for people on the Day of Judgment. The Qur’an is such an intercessor that none of its demands will be refused. On the Day of Judgment it will protect those who read and observed it, it will intercede for them, and help them win eternal paradise. The Prophet (pbuh) encourages reading the Qur’an in the following hadith,
“Read the Qur’an! It will be such a wonderful intercessor on Doomsday.’ The rest of the hadith tells us how the Quran will intercede:
“On Doomsday the Quran will speak (for those who read it) Lord, adorn him with honor’. That person will be adorned with honor. The Quran will say, “Lord, dress him in honor.’ The person will be dressed in honor. He will be crowned with the crown of honor” (Timidhi, Fada’il al-Qur’an, 18).
There are various hadiths on the virtues of Qur’an lessons. Not only teaching the Qur’an but also discussing on related topics, as well as studying commentaries were praised in hadiths, one of which is,
“One who sets off with the intention to gain knowledge, Allah facilitates for him (to orient himself toward) the path to Heaven. When a group of people sit in a mosque, read Allah’s Book and discuss, sakina (divine serenity) descends on them, mercy covers them and angels surround them”’ (Tirmidhi, Qiraah,3).
This hadith does not mention individual reading but points out to the merits of group study and discussion. Reading the Qur’an, even as an individual activity, is a very special way of worshiping. However, when believers gather with a unified motive to read the Qur’an or to study any Qur’anic teachings, it is felt as if the skies are closer to earth and angels greet this sacred effort.
Qur’an lessons are not peculiar to mosques. Lessons carried out in houses are also praised. If the Qur’an is recited and studied in a house, that very house acquires a completely different identity and becomes on a par with a mosque in respect of its blessings. A hadith describes this state as,
“Sakina descends on those friends of Allah who gather in the houses of Allah, who recite the Qur’an, and who discuss it; grace covers them, angels surround them, and Allah talks of them when the angels are present” (Muslim, Dhikr, 37).
In the last sentence of this hadith, we can see an explanation of the verse:
“Remember Me then and I will remember you. Give thanks to Me and do not be ungrateful” (2:152).
Practice. Knowledge must be practiced. Unapplied knowledge is useless knowledge. There is little difference between possessing and not possessing knowledge if that knowledge is useless.
The Prophet (pbuh) said that in the future knowledge would disappear. When a companion asked, “We read the Qur’an, and teach it to our children. They will teach it to their children. How will knowledge disappear? The Prophet (pbuh) said, ‘Don’t you see? Are the Jews and Christians practicing the Torah (Tawrat) and the Gospel (Injil) in spite of reading them?(Ibn Maja, Fitan, 26).
“Study and teach the Qur’an. The state of the person who learns, reads, and practices the Qur’an is like a box filled with musk hose fragrance spreads everywhere. The state of the person who has leamned the Qur’an but does not read and practice it is a musk- filled box whose lid is tightly secured”(Timmidhi, Fadail al-Qur’an, 2).
